Teotihuacan's Pyramid of the Sun stands 65 metres tall, its mass containing roughly 1 million cubic metres of adobe brick and rubble—all carried and placed without draft animals or metal tools.
The city reached its apex between 100 and 650 CE, housing an estimated 125,000 residents across 20 square kilometres, making it the largest urban centre in the pre-Columbian Americas. When the Aztecs arrived centuries after its mysterious collapse, they named it Teotihuacan, "place where the gods were created," convinced only divine hands could have raised such monuments.
Today the site remains Mexico's most-visited archaeological zone, drawing over 4 million visitors annually to walk the 2.5-kilometre Avenue of the Dead and climb the steep western staircase of the Pyramid of the Sun. The flight itself lasts 45 to 60 minutes, depending on wind patterns above the valley. Passengers stand in wicker baskets divided into compartments, each holding two to four people, while the pilot manages propane burners overhead. The experience is remarkably quiet between burner blasts; hot air ballooning is wind travel, so there is no sensation of movement, only the slow rotation of the landscape below. After landing in agricultural fields north or east of the pyramids, ground crews retrieve baskets by truck. Most tour operators pair the balloon flight with post-flight access to the archaeological zone itself, allowing visitors to walk the structures they have just seen from above.
